  • THANK YOU BANGOR WINDOW AND SHADE!

Kirk of Bangor Window Shade & Drapery installed our blinds this morning. They are cordless cellular shade. The bedrooms are room darkening. That was difficult to photograph because the room is dark. No more sunlight at 4am unless the vet wants it. The other windows are lightening. We even got a pass-through between the great room and the kitchen. Thank you so much Kirk for donating you labor valued at over $3200. Now come to next week’s coffee on Wednesday morning to check out the new blinds. #supportamericanheroes #houseinthewoodsmilitaryfamilyretreat #givingback #thankyouforyoursupport

  • WHERE DID THEY GET THAT STUFF ANYWAY?

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED... Where does House in the Woods find their fundraising items used at Donation Drives like the Golf Tournaments or other Auctions? House in the Woods relies on generous sponsors (individuals and organizations) in order to support us in our fundraising efforts, which in turn keeps the lights on and the doors open for veterans to stay at the lodge, participate in outdoor retreats, and in many cases, aide in their healing process. Generous donors like Lars Owren... see a need, look at their resources, and make donations like this. We in turn use these in fundraising drives, which often times yield more than their value, and in turn becomes a sponsor for a veteran attending a retreat. The bottom line is... you don't need to donate money. Whatever your time, talent and resources allow... THAT is how you GIVE BACK. It's a team effort and everyone has something to give. THANK YOU Lars, thank you Jojo's Gunworks in Connecticut and Whitney's Outfitters of Lincoln, Maine for aiding in the process. Want more information on where you can get in on This action? (Details have not officially been released yet) Send an email to Angie at angie.gade@houseinthewoods.org

  • LETTER FROM THE EDITOR of THE HUNTING WIRE

Fall is finally here and so is deer season! I’m out hunting, and I hope you are too. Are you mentoring someone this season, or are you being mentored? Chances are if you’re hunting, someone helped you along the way, and if we want to continue to hunt as freely or maybe more freely in the future, how we hunt, and who hunts matters now more than ever. This edition of The Hunting Wire is packed full of useful and prudent mentorship advice from Karen Butler’s VoLP essay to LSU’s own Bret Collier’s first essay in our new Conservation Pillars series. Later this year look for a series about brand new deer hunters from across the United States who, together with industry partners Mossberg, GPO USA, and the National Deer Association learn how to hunt America’s most popular big game animals in a variety of geographically unique areas. We also have several rifles out for field testing with our battery of superb outdoor writers who are after moose, black bear, antelope, wolf, elk, and of course deer. Stay tuned to The Hunting Wire as they report in from around the world with their successes and failures hunting with the latest firearms, optics, and ammunition available to hunters today. As always, thank you for your support and feedback about The Hunting Wire, Jay Pinsky jay@theoutdoorwire.com FIND ORIGINAL ARTICLE & MORE AT https://www.huntingwire.com/ #houseinthewoodsmilitaryfamilyretreat #giveback #supportveterans #freedomisntfree #hitwturboboost #veterans #military #veteran #army #navy #marines #airforce #veteransday #usa #usmc #usarmy #america #usnavy #coastguard #militarylife #veteransupport #soldier #usairforce #freedom #veteranshelpingveterans

  • How do you call in a Bull Moose in Maine?

Just how DO you call a bull moose in? Do four or five short grunts mimicking another bull moose, followed by another short sequence of cow calls. That's it... easy right? Calling bull moose during the rut is the biggest draw due to the high probability of attracting a bull with vocalizations. Getting a bull to respond to your calls is nothing short of magical. Calling is effective throughout the breeding period, but the key is recognizing when the action begins, peaks, and ends. Similar to whitetails, the timing of the moose estrus is consistent from year to year. Bulls will continue looking for cows in heat even after the rut peak is over. THANK YOU CODY MOORE for your service. We're so grateful to be able to spend this time with you! Thank you Rick Wotton for sharing your camp and your generosity of helping guide this hunt. This team is going to ROCK the moose hunt and a little birdy told us perhaps a bull has been spotted in the area! Good luck out there and be safe! We'll keep everyone updated as Cody and the guides venture into the woods on Monday October 11th. Veteran retreats are priceless ways that we can thank and honor our veterans for their service and sacrifice. Thank you to those of you who have donated towards sponsorship of this Purple heart veteran's retreat. To date we've raised $395 towards this retreat and still in need of sponsorship. To find out more about sponsoring Cody or other veterans on future retreats, please send a FB DM, email, text or call Angie Gade angie.gade@houseinthewoods.org Your support is greatly appreciated, allowing us to continue hosting veterans for Free** #supportveterans#houseinthewoodsmilitaryfamilyretreat#hitwmoosehunt2021🇺🇸

  • Mother Nature can Cure Most things... especially from the neck UP!

You know that feeling, you wake in the morning and feel a chill on your cheek. Instead of popping out of bed, you pull that blanket up over your shoulder and curl your toes in tight, letting out a little sigh. It’s fall, and the winds of change are coming. No more sweaty, sticky fingers on your daily walk. Instead of grabbing a ballcap, you’ll look for one with a beanie or a fuzzy sweatshirt, on the way out the door. Fall is in the air and, if you’re like us, this is our favorite time of the year. Not only are the leaves changing colors, but if you sit quietly enough for just a bit you’ll find yourself among a sea of colored leaves and a little breeze blowing through your hair. That smell though, there are no words to describe it. There’s something about the smell of crispy rainbow assorted leaves that puts a big smile on my face and makes me stop for a moment to breathe it all in nice and slow. It puts me in the mood for some hot cocoa, or perhaps a caramel apple or some homemade pumpkin pie… yum, now you’re talking! Mother Nature sure got it right when she gave us the gift of the great outdoors. The sun, clouds, wind, lakes, woodlands, prairies or streams, wherever you go, you will find it. PEACE. If you’re among the large percentage of individuals who report having anxiety or depression, please hear us out. Nature can work miracles. Do you like the sound of reduced stress, more focus, improved creativity, reconnection with friends and family, improved mood, sleep, and self- esteem? Us too! Reports have concluded that AWE… as opposed to joy, pride, amusement, contentment, and other positive emotions, is the single sensation that goes the furthest in boosting one’s overall sense of well-being. AWE can only be described as an experience that fills you with complete and utter joy, leaving you unable to think about or focus on anything else. AWE is the ingredient you benefit from when being in nature, and why it’s so good for you. It is our theory at House in the Woods, that the more opportunities you have to feel AWE, the better you’re going to feel, and will boost your overall well-being. Bobby Lader of Marolina Outdoor has the right idea, “Mother Nature can cure most things, especially from the Neck UP!” Outdoor retreats offered at House in the Woods do just that, and even better, you experience it alongside the men and women who understand you most, your fellow military brothers and sisters. When you feel the awe together, you build a bond. That’s what becoming part of the House in the Woods family is about… HEALING TOGETHER. That being said, head out into nature, even if for just a few minutes. Look around at the leaves, trees, bugs, trails, animals, streams and mountains. See the awe and feel the wonder. FEEL the Peace. Keep watching our Facebook Page and website houseinthewoods.org for updates on the latest retreats and upcoming events at the lodge.

  • THANK YOU WISCONSIN!!

Sunday, August 16th Cody Krepline, veteran in Brillion, Wisconsin stayed up all night to ensure that the Pig was cooking well over night in preparation for the big PIG ROAST FUNDRASER at Braun's Deer Run in Brillion Wisconsin. Glenn Braun, owner of Deer Run had originally planned on donating 50% of the Green's fees for the day, to House in the Woods for their 1st annual Sturgeon spearing retreat in 2022, but in the early morning hours he announced that 100% of the green fees would be donated. What a generous donation! We're still tallying the funds raised that day but what a turnout, what beautiful weather, and what an amazing way to honor the service and sacrifice for our American Heroes! THANK YOU to all who came out to support our veterans and House in the Woods! https://www.facebook.com/BraunsDeerRunGolfCourseAndRestaurant
