  • HOUSE IN THE WOODS JOINS HANDS WITH WREATHS ACROSS AMERICASMALL TOWN BIG HEARTS

https://www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/pages/171638 The mission of House in the Woods is to Give Back to our military heroes and their families. One of the ways we're able to do that is by Remembering our Fallen Heroes. It seems appropriate today to announce our new collaboration with Wreaths Across America. Each December on National Wreaths Across America Day, their mission to Remember, Honor and Teach is carried out by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as at more than 2,500 additional locations in all 50 U.S. states, at sea and abroad, which now includes 3 cemeteries in Lee, Maine (Woodlawn, North and South). House in the Woods will host a wreath laying ceremony at each of these 3 cemeteries. 10 a.m., 11 am. and Woodlawn at noon (at the same time Arlington is hosting theirs). After the ceremony, the goal is to have enough sponsored wreaths to lay a wreath on each veteran's grave in all 3 cemeteries. There are 237 veteran graves in these 3 cemeteries many of which may have long been forgotten by friends or family. If you'd like to help honor the veterans of these 3 cemeteries, please visit the House in the Woods website or enter the link below to sponsor your wreath. Each wreath is $15 ($5 of which comes back to House in the Woods) so not only are we honoring these heroes, but we're also giving back to the heroes who we serve through the House in the Woods mission. Thank you for your support. Thank you for Honoring and Remembering all of our military heroes. https://www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/pages/171638 House in the Woods 217 Skunk Hill Road Lee, Maine 04455 920-517-6749 houseinthewoods.org angie.gade@houseinthewoods.org FB @houseinthewoodsmilitaryfamilyretreat LinkedIn @houseinthewoodsmilitaryandfamilyretreat

  • DINOSAUR SPEARING VETERAN RETREAT! Yes...

Larry Dakin, Gene Trisch and Mike Thurlow of Maine have taken on a mission to give back to our veterans in a HUGE WAY which we're hopeful will have HUGE results come time for the next veteran Sturgeon Spearing Retreat. Sturgeon reach a size of roughly 7-8 feet long, roughly 300 pounds and 150 years old... true dinosaurs! Gene is a Vietnam Veteran of Maine, originally from Michigan where his father used to make some of the very best Sturgeon Spears back in the day for Sturgeon Spearers in Michigan and Wisconsin. He heard about the strugeon spearing retreat, found out the House in the Woods team is in need of spears, and decided he would take on this great project, to donate. Larry is a retired machinist and Navy Vietnam Veteran! Larry graciously offered to make the spear detents for our fellow Veterans. Mike Thurlow from Lee, Maine graciously offered to make the wood handles using curly maple for the spears! To use rare Curly Maple for the handles shows me how much respect Mike Thurlow has for Veterans! Gene contacted the Wisconsin DNR and talked to officer Jason Higgins to get the legal specifications of the spears and found out that the spear handle should have a detent to separate from the spear for safety reasons! Jason elaborated by saying, A 200 lb. Sturgeon could do some damage with a 7 foot handle! Gene then contacted the Te-Co Company from Union, Ohio and talked to Scott Johnston. Scott graciously offered to supply the Plungers for the detents. It was a huge help because he sent samples so we could decide on the correct plungers for the detents. The detents are a machined tool holding the spear handle onto the spear and it will separate on impacting a sturgeon. Gene didn't stop short of considering the safety of our veterans. So much time, energy, love and talent was put into creation of these spears that there's no doubt not only will they be a tool to be used during the Sturgeon Spearing retreat for years and years to come but all of the love put into them sure will make them LUCKY!!! Margaret Stadig, Wisconsins top Sturgeon Biologist, also called Gene about the Sturgeon spear specifications. Thank you G-NO for all of the love and care you've put into these spears. We're so grateful you're part of the House in the Woods family... these spears will stay with the retreat for years to come and will carry with them years and years of memory and camaraderie amongst the veterans. Thank you to Gene, Mike, Larry, and each person that was involved in this project. What a blessing you all are to your fellow veterans, and to the House in the Woods mission of Giving Back. If anyone is interested in applying for the Wisconsin Veteran Sturgeon Spearing Retreat you can do so at the House in the Woods website. Attendees will be selected August 31st, 2022. #TOGETHERWEHEAL

  • HONOR AND REMEMBER...

Nascar, Coca-Cola, and Honor & Remember have joined forces to pay tribute to our US Armed Forces at the upcoming May 29th Coca-Cola 600 at the Charlotte, North Carolina Motor Speedway. Thanks to this amazing collaboration, Joey Logano, Car#22, will be host to the name of one very special fallen hero during this race. NASCAR and Coca-Cola will host Gold Star Families during Memorial Day weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway. For those families, what makes this extra special is that their Fallen Hero's name will be featured on one of the NASCAR Cup Series cars featured in the race that day. One of them being our very own ARMY SGT. JOEL A. HOUSE, son of Paul and Dee House. You will see Joel's name on the #22 car, driven by Joey Logano. What an incredible way for the Nascar family to unite in Honor and Remembrance not only those who have served our country, but particularly those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Let us all come together on that day in camaraderie, watch Saturday May 29th 6 p.m. EST, and reflect on our nation’s heroes and honor the sacrifices they make every day to keep our country and its communities safe. Thank you to Nascar, Coca-Cola, Honor and Remember, the Joey Logano team, and all of those involved, for making this possible. #TOGETHERWEHEAL NASCAR NASCAR on FOX House In The Woods Honor and Remember Joey Logano Paul House Deanna House Luke House Joy House McLaughlin Coca-Cola Coca-Cola 600 Charlotte Motor Speedway

  • Backwoods of Maine... here we come!

Thank you Jason for your donation of these 2 incredible wall tents. Some of you are wondering - what do you do with a wall tent? Wall tents are suitable as a four-season tent, as they are able to accommodate a wood stove so they will be a great addition to the lodge for attendee and volunteer lodging. These tents are light weight yet sturdy, making them a great addition to the House in the Woods tools. We're exploring the possibility of adding a backcountry retreat to our offerings, which is super exciting! Anyone know a good Elk hunt guide looking for an out west adventure? Whether it's right in our backyard in Lee, in the backwoods of Maine, or traveling out west to the great unknown... these tents are another step in the growing offerings of retreats for our Military Heroes. Thank you JASON, for GIVING BACK... thanks to your generosity, willingness to lend a hand, and for your vision... we appreciate you and as do those who will experience the mission as you have. YOU are SAVING LIVES. #TOGETHERWEHEAL

  • Elvis has left the building

Elvis has left the building. WHEW... WHAT A NIGHT Thank you Bangor Elks BPOE #244 for allowing us the use of your room, it was PERFECT. Elvis (Don Boudreau) sang his heart out to a starry eyed crowd grateful to get a glimpse of the king himself. Attendees sang, danced, and reminisced back to when the King was still on stage. Scott Hanington and Vann White gave an amazing performance as well as our volunteer Auctioneer team. SAMS Veteran's program volunteers Brent Grover & Greg McNeal made a meal of a lifetime that night and topped it off with the most delicious deserts you'll ever find. The meal was a masterpiece and the room was quite for just a bit which means everyone was enjoying it! Thanks to EVERYONE involved in Saturday night's NIGHT OUT WITH ELVIS, you all were able to raise enough money to take 12 Veterans on Outdoor retreats FREE to them, for healing and camaraderie. Those who participated will receive regular updates about the Veterans we were able to sponsor that night, as they attend the retreats throughout 2022. As we mentioned that night, these aren't just donations going into an account. These are donations represent Veterans, with real stories, and real sacrifice. Thank you for your support - together we truly are SAVING LIVES. STAY TUNED... Elvis will be visiting Bangor again in 2023! You won't want to miss out. If you'd like to get involved in next year's fundraiser please call Angie at 920-517-6749 or email at angie.gade@houseinthewoods.org #TOGETHERWEHEAL

  • Healing doesn't just happen in Maine!

TOGETHER WE HEAL... the motto here at House in the Woods Military & Family Retreat. Whether we're having coffee at the lodge, ice fishing in Lee, Maine, gator hunting in Florida, or Sturgeon Spearing in Wisconsin, there's one thing that all of our retreat have in common and that's not the animals... HEALING is happening. Behind every face, every smile, every veteran - there's a story. That story is unique and special, and understood best by other veterans. It is our pleasure, duty, and honor to make it possible for our veterans to come together, share time in the outdoors for healing and camaraderie. Here you'll see the first leg of our Florida retreat, fishing off Pompano Beach, Florida thanks to our very generous Veteran host Aaron, and his beautiful wife Vanessa. Thanks to generous donors and hosts like Aaron, healing is possible. Enjoy a sneek peak into our Florida retreat, and be on the lookout for pictures and videos of something a little more toothy to come... #Veterans #americanheroes #givingback #houseinthewoodsmilitaryfamilyretreat #togetherweheal #healing #outdoors #getoutdoors

  • A Moment With Joel

Girl scout Troop#1470 of Lincoln has been working towards their Silver Pin, which involved volunteering their time with House in the Woods on a very special project. The photos here capture just one portion of their project, a sign with Sgt. Joel A. House’s photo on it and a poem, which will stand next to Joel’s bench on the House in the Woods walking trail. This sign represents the fact that although Joel made the ultimate sacrifice for his country back on June 23, 2007, he is always with us in spirit and here to help guide the families that come and take rest on his bench. If you would like to, come visit us at House in the Woods, visit Joel’s bench, and see for yourself. The sign isn’t up quite yet, as the ground is not quite thawed but we’ll share the poem with you here, and you can visit when the weather warms up. “A MOMENT WITH JOEL” Sit with me a moment friend, And see a brighter way. Breath in the fresh air And reflect upon the day. Leave with me your struggles, Take with you only peace. Sadness, anger, guilt, and shame, Now can be released. You may kneel unto this bench for strength, Or look up and warm your face. There’s only peace here my friend, You’re in a safe place. I’ll be here for you until next time, Just know you’re never alone. Visit me again soon, At your Home Away from Home. Thank you, Maddy Stewart & Norma Priest, for assisting these young women not only through this project, which we hold near and dear to our hearts, but for sharing your own time and talents, being a great example of what it means to be selfless and Giving Back to others. You’re both amazing examples for these young women. In addition to several other signs marking the path on our walking trail the girls made a monetary donation of the funds raised. Thank you, ladies, for your continued support of our military men and women, to whom we owe all that we can give, for their service and sacrifice. What you’re doing may seem small in the big picture, but you are truly Saving Lives. We all do our part and you’re making a BIG difference.
