Dick Pelletier of Staceyville, Maine - donor of land to House in the Woods for Veteran retreats

In the little town of Staceyville, Maine, a man named Dick Pelletier left behind more than

just memories, he left a legacy that will continue to impact lives for generations. Dick’s

generosity, passion for the outdoors, and dedication to helping others have created

ripples that will last far beyond his short time with us.

Several years before he passed, Dick made a profound gesture that truly showed his

character and showed what kind of man Dick was deep down. He donated a

magnificent piece of land with breathtaking views of Mount Katahdin to House in the

Woods Military & Family Retreat located in Lee, Maine, a retreat that provides free

outdoor retreats for Veterans and their loved ones. This land wasn’t just a donation to a

program—it was a gift of peace, a haven for Veterans to find connection, camaraderie,

and healing through spending time with other Veterans in the great outdoors.

In the last few years, the House in the Woods family has worked to understand and

evaluate the land for future hunting retreats. In January of this year, a few volunteers

spent a chilly day walking the property, observing the natural signs left by the creatures

that call it home. Tracks from moose, deer, bobcats, rabbits, and squirrels tell stories of

the wildlife that thrives there. Judging by the down trees found on the property it's

apparent just how much land can change. Beavers had once called this property home

too. These signs indicate that this property would likely be a good spot for small game

retreats soon, continuing to fulfill its purpose of bringing people closer to the land and to

each other. With its relatively proximity to the House in the Woods Lodge in Lee, it's the

prime location for planning a retreat as lodging is nice and close, keeping the cost of the

retreat relatively low as well. They're always taking donor dollars into consideration and

supporting as many Veterans as possible with their donated funds.

After a day in the woods, Paul House, co-founder of House in the Woods, visited Dick’s

father, William Pelletier. Together, they reminisced about the land and the many

memories tied to it. There’s something so special about hearing stories from those who

have been blessed to watch the transformation of a property over the decades—stories

that reveal hidden corners and secrets that only time and experience can uncover.

Dick’s influence is felt in every step taken on that land, and every conversation had with

his father Will. Though Dick is no longer with us in body, his spirit walks alongside each

and every person that steps onto that beautiful property, reminding us of the power of

generosity and love for the outdoors. He understood the healing that comes from

nature, and his gift ensures that Veterans from across the country will have a place to

find that same peace and connection.

Paul House had this to share about Dick, “In talking to Dick he always told me he

wanted to do something for Veterans. When I met him he took be through the property

he had and he said it’s something he wanted to give for Veterans to use. A year or twolater he met me in person to make the arrangements. He was a very passionate person

about helping Veterans having a place to hunt and spend time.”

The land itself is a treasure as you can see, with its “million-dollar view” of Mount

Katahdin. The spirit of the land offers a sense of serenity and awe that words can't

possibly convey. It’s a place where Veterans will gather, not just to hunt or explore, but

to connect, share stories, heal and form lifelong bonds for some. It’s a space where the

scars of war can begin to fade, replaced by the comfort of community and the beauty of

Maine’s wilderness.

Dick Pelletier’s life and generosity remind us of the lifelong impact one person can have.

As we reflect on Dick’s life, we are reminded of the importance of generosity, giving

back, and leaving a positive mark on the world. Whether through gestures like donating

land or through simple acts of kindness, the impact we have on others shapes our

legacy. Dick’s story inspires us to consider how we can make a difference, how we can

support causes close to our hearts, and how we can live in a way that ensures our

memory brings joy and healing to others.

At House in the Woods, we are honored to carry forward Dick Pelletier’s legacy. His gift

will continue to serve as a place of refuge and renewal for Veterans and their families.

The ways in which you give, the love you share will be felt like ripples on a lake, down

through generations.

To Dick’s family and friends, we extend our deepest gratitude for sharing him with us.

And to Dick, though you are no longer with us in person, your spirit remains in every

tree, every trail, and every moment of peace that Veterans find on your land. Thank you

for your generosity, your vision, and your heart. You have left a legacy that will last

forever in our hearts, and in the lives of all of the Veterans who will share time here now

and for generations to come. You are deeply missed but forever remembered.
